Trusting God

Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego
in situations that require a total trust in God

The burning fiery furnace

Daniel chapter 2:46-49

Daniel explains Nebuchadnezzar's dream
‣Nebuchadnezzar believes the interpretation of the dream is from God
‣He promotes Daniel to be ruler over the whole province of Babylon
‣He sets Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego over the affairs of the
  province of Babylon
Daniel Chapter 3

Verse 1-3
‣Nebuchadnezzar soon forgets the experience with his dream
‣He made an image of gold
‣He required people of the kingdom to come to the dedication of the image

Verse 4-11
‣A herald commanded, when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre,
and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music you shall fall down
   and worship the gold image
‣Whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast into a burning fiery furnace

Verse 12-15
‣Certain Chaldeans accuse Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego of not serving
Nebuchadnezzar's gods or worshiping the gold image
‣In rage and fury, he commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego
‣Nebuchadnezzar spoke, “Is it true that you do not serve my gods and the image?"
‣If not, you shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace
‣And who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?”

Verse 16-18
‣Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king
‣Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace
‣But if not, we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image

Verse 19-23
‣Then Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury
‣He commanded mighty men to bind them and cast them into the fiery furnace

Verse 24-25
‣Nebuchadnezzar was astonished; and he rose in haste and spoke to his counselors
‣Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?
‣I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt,
and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God

Verse 26-30
‣Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego came from the midst of the fire
and they saw these men on whose bodies the fire had no power
‣Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach
and Abed-Nego, who sent His Angel and delivered His servants who trusted
in Him and they have frustrated the king’s word, and yielded their bodies,
that they should not serve nor worship any god except their own God!

The Lions' den

Daniel Chapter 6
Verse 1-9
‣It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom one hundred and twenty satraps,
to be over the whole kingdom
‣So the governors and satraps sought to find some charge against Daniel
concerning the kingdom; but they could find no charge or fault, because
he was faithful; nor was there any error or fault found in him
‣They knew they could charge him only if it is concerning the law of his God.”
‣They decided to establish a royal statute and to make a firm decree, that whoever
petitions any god or man for thirty days, except you, O king, shall be cast into
the den of lions, and King Darius signed the written decree.
‣According to the law of the Medes and Persians, this statute cannot be changed.

Verse 10-12
‣When Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home.
‣And in his upper room he knelt down on his knees three times that day
and prayed and gave thanks before his God
‣Then these men assembled and found Daniel praying and making
   supplication before his God
‣Then they went before the king, and spoke concerning the king’s decree:
“Have you not signed a decree that every man who petitions any god or man within
thirty days, except you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?”
‣The king answered and said, “The thing is true, according to the law of the
Medes and Persians, which does not alter.”

Verse 13-17
‣The king, was greatly displeased with himself, and set his heart on
   Daniel to deliver him
‣Then these men approached the king, and said to the king, “Know, O king,
that it is the law and cannot be changed”
‣The king gave the command, and they brought Daniel and cast him into the den
of lions saying to Daniel, "Your God, whom you serve continually, He will deliver you”

Verse 18-28
‣The king went to his palace and his sleep went from him
‣He arose very early in the morning and went in haste to the den of lions
‣When he came to the den, he cried out with a lamenting voice to Daniel
‣He spoke to Daniel, “has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver
   you from the lions?”
‣Daniel said to the king, “O king, live forever! My God sent His angel and
shut the lions’ mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I was found
innocent before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong before you.”
‣The king was exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should
take Daniel up out of the den.
‣So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no injury whatever was
found on him, because he believed in his God.

‣Then King Darius wrote:    To all peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth:
   Peace be multiplied to you
I make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men must tremble
and fear before the God of Daniel
For He is the living God
   And steadfast forever
His kingdom is the one which shall not be destroyed
And His dominion shall endure to the end
   He delivers and rescues
And He works signs and wonders
   In heaven and on earth
Who has delivered Daniel from the power of the lions

What do we learn from these 2 accounts?

Daniel and his 3 friends trusted in God and they did not lose that trust in the face
of certain death, they were protected due to their faithfulness.
‣Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego were faithful to God whether he would
save them from the fiery furnace or not.
‣Daniel said to the king, my God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths,
so that they have not hurt me.

They were strong believers in God. We must be strong believers in Christ and God. In the bible there are many examples of people suffering difficult times and did not lose faith in God.

Jesus willing to die on the cross is our prime example.

Acts 16:25, Paul and Silas had been put in prison. In spite of this difficulty they did not lose trust in God and were praying and singing hymns to God.
Acts 16:22-26

It is highly unlikely that we, today, will go through what Daniel, his friends and Paul and Silas went through. We need to learn to never lose trust in God in the face of hard times, war or nuclear war, the collapse of the entire world or anything else. We need to know that if we ever lose faith in God, Jesus will remain faithful.
